Natural Womanhood’s Period Genius video series is intended primarily for parents of preteen or young teen girls who would like to inform their daughters about puberty, their menstrual cycles, and fertility.

Our program is for parents who want to empower their daughters with this knowledge in an age-appropriate manner, and respect their innocence concerning sexuality.

It really depends on you and your daughter; there is not one specific age recommended for using our program. However, we encourage you to do it sooner, rather than later! It is better to have these conversations before your daughter’s first period. However, it’s not too late to start the program if she has already begun cycling, as our program will help her to understand what’s going on within her body and mind each month.

But just how early should you start? Paying attention to your daughter, her peers, and their development will help you know.

For example, do you see budding signs of puberty in her or her peers? Is her school starting to present information about it.

All these are reasons for you to take the drivers’ seat and assert your role as her parent.

The goals of Period Genius are to help girls understand their cycle and gain confidence in who they are as women, and to help parents build an open and trusting relationship with their daughters in the area of cycle health and fertility.

Ultimately, we want to empower parents to provide their daughters with a positive and informed view of their reproductive health.

The program includes a clear and engaging presentation of the science of the female body, such as hormone changes, anatomy, and ovulation, without being overwhelming. There is no reference to intercourse, or for that matter, contraception or natural family planning.

We believe parents are the primary educators of their children, and so this program strives to facilitate trusting communication between moms and daughters.

The Period Genius video series doesn’t teach about sexuality and intercourse. It focuses on helping a girl understand the changes in her body during and following puberty, the meaning and purpose of these changes, and ways to manage these changes to remain healthy. It also includes something that sex-ed almost never does: an in-depth knowledge of the cycle and its purpose, and an introduction to the concept of charting the cycle to better understand it.

The underlying message of this program is that a woman’s fertility is a gift, and that it should be kept healthy both because it impacts one’s overall health, and because it serves the purpose of having children when one gets married.

We’ll be honest: you are the best person to teach your daughter the way you know she needs to be taught–not us, nor anyone else! However, we can promise you that our course is based on the most sound and up-to-date science on fertility.

The course’s content has been reviewed by Natural Womanhood’s Scientific Advisory Board, which includes physicians trained in the modern science of fertility awareness.

We can also promise that this is NOT a sex-ed course. It focuses on the design and purpose of the woman’s body, as well as ways to keep it healthy.

If you are familiar with the work of Natural Womanhood, you will find this program is very similar in approach to the rest of our organization’s original content, but age-appropriate for a young girl.

We also encourage you to preview the short videos before sharing them with your daughter, so that you are comfortable with the content presented within them. Again, our goal with this program is to put you in the driver’s seat.

Period Genius includes a Step-by-Step guide which will help you prepare, plan, and deploy the course over about 10 weeks, one week for each video you watch together.

You can take it slower or faster as you see fit. In the preparation phase, you will find ways to start opening a dialog with your daughter. Then, the Step-by-Step guide proposes ways to make the video viewing interactive by suggesting discussion points with your daughter for each video you watch together. The core content of Period Genius includes the changes to expect with puberty, the design of the woman’s body and the way cycles work, and the purpose of the cycle and fertility.

We also cover the practical ways to deal with periods and various options for hygiene products, focusing on the most common ones for this age and some of the reasons a girl might choose one versus the other.

We also speak about good nutrition, sleep, and exercise as a way to promote healthy and painless cycles, but we don’t provide in-depth nutrition information.

We also have a guide to help parents and their daughters know when to see a doctor, and most importantly, how to choose one who has a whole-person approach, versus a doctor who will simply prescribe birth control pills.

We do not offer any medical advice for approaching specific cycle issues (such endometriosis, PCOS, PMDD, etc.), but our guide on when to see a doctor can help you discern the best course of action for getting the right help for your daughter should she need it.
